The ultimate guide to choosing the perfect sink for a small kitchen
Apartments, granny flats and small homes often have small kitchens. In these small spaces it can be difficult to achieve both the design and functionality that you want from your kitchen. But that doesn’t mean it’s not possible.
To help make your small kitchen renovation easier, we’ve come up with a guide to choosing the perfect sink for your space.
Size your sink to your kitchen (and needs)
Generally speaking, a smaller kitchen may suit a smaller sink, while a large kitchen may suit a larger one. A compact sink will take up less precious bench space and is unlikely to visually overwhelm the space. However, this rule isn’t set in stone. If you go with a larger, designer sink like the Schock, your sink can be the statement centrepiece that the rest of your kitchen design revolves around.
Go for an undermount
When bench space is at a premium, there’s no room for seals or lips around sinks that cut into usable area. This may be a problem with top-mounted sinks, but not with undermounted ones. If your sink is installed using this method it’ll sit flush with your kitchen bench – giving you extra space (and making the area easier to clean).
Think light colours
Dark colours in small spaces are almost always best avoided. The same goes for compact kitchens. When you’re renovating yours go for whites, creams, and other light colours to create the impression the room is light and airy, not closed off and claustrophobic.
Get a deep bowl sink
If you’ve got large dishes to wash regularly you may need lots of sink space. The problem is, large sinks obviously cut into your counter space and reduce your kitchen’s prep area. The obvious solution is to go for a compact, narrow sink with a deep bowl.
Abey has hundreds of options that fit the bill on its extensive online store, including the minimalist Lago single bowl.
Choose a hard wearing material
Large kitchens tend to wear slower and easier because use is spread out over a larger space. In small kitchens the opposite happens, and they tend to wear out much quicker. With that in mind, it’s a great idea to choose hard wearing materials for your renovation, such as stainless steel or fireclay. We think the Chambord Clotaire small single bowl in fireclay is the perfect option.
See your options in person
Before choosing a sink for your small kitchen it’s essential that you see your options in person. Only then can you get an idea of how a sink may fit into your space and how it’ll suit your planned design.
