Small space, big impact: Making the most out of a compact bathroom
It can be tricky to renovate small bathroom spaces well. But if you know what you’re doing, use quality products from reputable brands, and follow this advice – your small bathroom renovation could have a huge impact.
Go for wall-mounted basins, shelves and toilets
When renovating a small bathroom it’s always best to have fixtures and fittings wall mounted and floating off the floor – the empty space underneath them tends to create the illusion of a larger room.
A compact wall hung basin like the Gareth Ashton Vela is a great option for really compact spaces, so are floating shelves and floating toilets.
Wall mount your mixers and taps too
Because you’ll most likely go for a smaller vanity or basin, you’ll need all the space you can get on its surface. To save a little room it’s a great idea to also wall mount your taps and mixers – something like the Poco Wall Basin could be perfect.
Stick to lighter colours
We love darker, moodier colours in larger spaces, but they can make small bathrooms feel a little claustrophobic. Don’t be afraid to use colour – but usually it’s better to use lighter shades and whites in smaller bathrooms.
Work around the architecture
We’ve seen countless bathroom renovations that have made the best out of awkward architecture. Stuff like slanting ceilings, tight corners and narrow spaces. While changing the layout itself may improve it, doing work like this is often prohibitively expensive – instead it’s easy to work around the architecture. Think about how you could install your fixtures and fittings to make the space look better, and consider a skylight if the bathroom is too dark.
Include mirrors
Large mirrors are great for creating an illusion of space in small bathrooms. If you’re going for a classic, heritage look, the Arcade Classic 3-fold mirror by Burlington could be a great option.
Transform your bathroom into a wet room
If you’re going for a conventional bathroom design, there’s obviously a limit to how close you can place certain fittings and fixtures – like for example, your shower and your sink. But with a wetroom, everything can be more compact, without sacrificing the look and functionality of the space (plus having a space tiled from floor to ceiling looks amazing).
Make an impact
With smaller bathrooms it’s a great idea to have one design feature that’s the hero. For example, we’ve seen the Canal Petite Clearstone Bath installed in a small space, and its clean lines and attractive shape always look amazing.
