Kitchen need a refresh? Read our tips for a quick sink upgrade

If the kitchen is the heart of the home we reckon the sink is the heart of the kitchen. So if your kitchen needs a refresh, simply updating your sink and a few select fittings can make a world of difference.

To get you started we’ve put together pout top tips for a quick, easy and effective sink upgrade.

Ask yourself, is a kitchen sink upgrade enough?

Take a look around your kitchen. Will a kitchen sink upgrade make a difference or is a full renovation needed? If your space is out of date and worn down a sink upgrade may not be quite enough, but if it’s just a little dated you may get away with it.

(If you choose to only upgrade your sink, remember you can always carry out a full renovation in a few years to suit the sink you install now).

Fit the sink to the space

If you’re going for a quick, easy install it’s a great idea to pick a sink that’s the exact same size as your current sink. When that’s not possible, go for a sink that’s larger so that you can simply expand the original sink cavity (rather than buying an all new benchtop as you’d need to if you went for a smaller sink).

Match and elevate your kitchen’s design

The right sink can elevate any kitchen design. For example, if your space has a classic theme but it’s a little dated, a new, heritage style sink can add a premium touch that’ll make the rest of the kitchen look classier.

When you’re choosing make sure you match the style of your kitchen to your sink (i.e. minimalist, modern, heritage, industrial) and consider the colours around your kitchen too.

Think about your existing fittings and fixtures

Your new kitchen sink should match or compliment your existing fittings and fixtures, such as your taps, cupboard door handles and appliances. Take some time to think about what materials, styles and colours might look best.

And if your kitchen fittings and fixtures are looking extremely dated, it might be a good idea to also upgrade these when you change your sink. Changing these may be enough to create the impression that your entire kitchen has been renovated.

Choose an on-trend style

While it’s not always best to follow the newest trends, it’s a good idea to take inspiration and ideas from them. Upcoming trends you may want to consider include:

  • Granite sinks: made by German company Shcock, these are durable, hygienic and look great. They’re also available in a number of colours.
  • Generous stainless steel: large, double bowl stainless sinks are all the rage at the moment, giving you the same functionality as a commercial kitchen, while lasting for decades.
  • Fireclay and farmhouse: these rustic looking sinks made out of fireclay are seeing a resurgence in classic or heritage style kitchens. Our favourite brand for fireclay sinks is Chambord, who make all their sinks in France from premium materials.
