How to design a multifunctional laundry space
The laundry is first and foremost a functional room. So why not make yours as useful as you possibly can when you next renovate?
To help you get more out of your space we’ve come up with six ways to transform your laundry into a multifunctional area.
Think about how you’ll use the space
First and foremost you should think about what you’d like to get out of your laundry and what you’ll be doing in there on a day-to-day basis. If you’re always taking care of stains a large sink and a drying rack may be the priority. If you’ve got a dog to wash and muddy boots that need to come off, a tiled wet room with a pull-out tap may be the best idea.
Don’t be afraid to get creative. If your laundry space is large you may even be able to incorporate a small sitting space next to a sunny window, or even a hidden office for work from home days.
Combine your bathroom and laundry
If your space doesn’t include a specialised laundry the bathroom is a great place to install one. These can be placed behind folding doors and completely hidden when not in use. Or if you’ve got a bathroom and laundry next door to each other, why not combine the two rooms by knocking down a wall? The extra room may make the new space much nicer to be in.
Make space for projects
Every now and then we all need a little space to get a project done. Whether we’re potting plants, repairing clothes, or building a stand for a little one’s science assignment – it’s a great idea to leave a little space on a workbench for those random tasks that tend to pop up every now and then.
Combine storage and laundry
When you’re doing your laundry generally it goes, washing, drying, then putting away. One way to make that last step easier is to combine your laundry space with linen and towel storage – that way when you’re done with washing and drying storage is just a step away.
Create a dog washing station
Got a furry friend? After a muddy walk or play session, washing in the bathroom often makes a giant mess and hosing your mate off outside can feel a little unkind. So why not install a giant sink like the Chambord Legrande in your space, which should comfortably fit a small dog and is perfect for washtime. Add in an extendable tap like the Gareth Ashton 304 and you’ve got a professional-grade dog wash station at home.
Use versatile, high-quality fixtures and fittings
The best way to ensure your laundry is fit for purpose is to combine high-quality materials and versatile fixtures and fittings. Go for large basins and counter spaces, taps with different spray functions and pull-out necks and high-tech appliances from top brands.
And most importantly make sure you’re buying quality from an Australian brand that you can trust.
