How to create a luxury kitchen: targeting your renovations

Kitchens in Australia have moved far beyond functional spaces for cooking, eating and doing the dishes. They’re focal points of many homes where you and your family spend huge amounts of time, as well as important entertaining spaces on special occasions.

So, it’s not surprising that many Australians are looking for ways to bring some extra style and sophistication to their kitchens. And the good news is that there’s a lot you can do through relatively simple renovations, as long as you’re targeted in your approach.

Here, we’ll show you some of the tweaks and modifications you can make to the appliances and aesthetics of your kitchen to help give it that luxury feel.

1 Choose the right appliances

Later, we’ll deal with some of the larger layout changes you can make to your kitchen. However, some of the easiest yet highly noticeable tweaks you can make involve swapping out some of the smaller fixtures and appliances.

A great place to start is your kitchen sink. This is a fixture you’ll use every day, and in many kitchens is located centrally, making it an aesthetic focal point. Luxury kitchen sinks tend to be on the larger side, often with two bowls, and made from quality materials such as fireclay, granite or stainless steel. There are no hard and fast rules on colours, although timelessness and luxury tend to go hand-in-hand, making whites or matte blacks popular choices. For example, this 1& ¾ bowl from Schock can come in black, pure black or white, meaning you can make a choice that fits seamlessly into the rest of your kitchen.

Of course, you’ll want to complement your luxury kitchen sink with a tap that also adds a touch of opulence. Gooseneck shapes have long been favoured by renovators whose main aesthetic objective is luxury. This Armando Vicario Provincial Single Lever Kitchen Mixer more than meets this criteria, and has the added benefit of a pull-out, which will come in handy for cleaning every corner of your large kitchen sink.

2 Make a statement with your island

Big kitchen islands are very popular at the moment, particularly in high-end kitchens. Again, this speaks to Australians using the kitchens for a whole range of activities, from food preparation to entertaining, and even as work spaces.

So, part of your kitchen renovation could include building out your current kitchen island, and also thinking carefully about its design. One thing you might want to consider is designating different areas of the island for different activities – for example, creating a workstation in one section, and a food preparation area in another. Taking this idea to a next level, you could even incorporate a bar sink, like this smart BS2B model that will allow you to wow guests as you whip up their favourite drinks.

3 Invest in bespoke kitchen cabinetry

Bespoke kitchen cabinetry doesn’t only scream luxury from an aesthetic perspective, it’s also highly practical, as it will allow you to make the most of every inch of space in your kitchen.

Solid timber and timber veneer cabinets are popular choices for luxury kitchen renovations, because they both look great and are highly durable. Then, when it comes to the countertops, you might want to consider luxe materials like marble and quartz.

Just remember, when making these decisions, to think about whether you want to go for a drop-in or undermount kitchen sink, as this will impact your cabinet choices.
