FLEX! The ultimate guide to choosing a kitchen tap and mixer

Whether you’re refreshing your kitchen or ripping it out and starting again – it’s important to choose a quality kitchen tap and mixer that fits your design. Sounds simple, but it’s easier said than done.

There’s a lot to consider when choosing a kitchen tap and mixer, from functionality, to finishes, water consumption and design. To get started check out our ultimate guide to choosing your kitchen tap and mixer.

Put functionality first

First and foremost, your kitchen and sink should be functional – whether you’re rinsing veggies, washing dishes or prepping dinner. It should be installed correctly to spray directly into the sink and have features that make your life easier.

That might include a pull-out tap that extends to better direct water around the sink, or even different spray modes for washing dishes.

Consider your kitchen design

Your next priority should be ensuring your kitchen tap and mixer complements your kitchen design. For example, if you’re going for an understated modern look something like the Gareth Ashton Lucia Side Lever Mixer in matte black could be perfect – or for a heritage look the Armando Vicario Provincial Kitchen Mixer might be ideal.

Get the finish right

It’s important to be careful with colour and use just the right amount in your kitchen. If the rest of your space is colourful, a simple stainless tap and mixer may be best – but if you’re looking to add a little personality why not try copper, brass or even brushed gold? Most importantly your tap’s finish should match or complement the other finishes and colours throughout your kitchen to tie it all together.

Check your sink’s existing holes

If you’re renovating your kitchen and buying a new sink you can skip this step. However if you’re refreshing your fittings and keeping your existing sink it’s important to check your sink’s existing holes.

For example, if your previous mixer had a separate tap and two levers you may need to install something similar to fit the three holes. If your previous mixer was a simple tap and mixer combined your sink may have just one hole and you’ll need to make new ones if your new tap requires it.

A mixer tap or separate hot and cold?

When you choose a tap you’ll need to consider whether you go with a mixer, which has one lever for controlling pressure and water temperature – or a separate hot and cold tap which has two levers.

Mixers tend to be easier to use and less visually cluttering, but an older style hot and cold tap can have a certain heritage charm.

Be water wise

It’s always best to choose a kitchen tap and mixer that uses the least amount of water while still being functional. To consider when shopping, look for each tap’s WELS rating and try to buy a tap with a four, five or six-star rating. Remember – more stars equals better water efficiency.
