6 big ideas for small laundry spaces

1. Integrate your laundry

If you don’t have the room for a laundry, simply make room! With a little work, custom benches and cabinetry you can create a laundry in almost any space. 

Think double door cupboards, bathrooms or even the back wall of your garage. Wherever you happen to integrate your laundry, be mindful of how adding a laundry will affect the room, how the sound may travel when using the appliances and whether or not you want to add doors to hide the space. 

2. Maximise the space

If your laundry space is small, use every inch of it. You could add a benchtop over your washer and dryer, with storage integrated underneath if there’s space. There could be a clothes drying rail or rack over your bench, an integrated sink, then wall-hung storage above. 

3. Wall-mount fittings

If your laundry is in your garage you may use the benchtop for any number of things from working on stained clothes, to folding laundry. Given your benchtop will be a small space it’s a great idea to maximise it by minimising clutter.

4. Use neutral colours

We love bright colours, but usually in smaller laundry spaces it’s best to go with light, neutral shades – think whites, chromes and light greys. These tend to make spaces feel larger, whereas dark or intense colours tend to do the opposite. 

If you do want to add a little modern personality to the space try a matte black sink mixer. 

5. Stack your washer and dryer

The biggest items in most laundries are the washer, dryer and cabinetry. One of the best ways to save space, especially in narrow laundry spaces, is to simply stack your washer and dryer on top of one another. 

Keep in mind, you can’t simply lift your dryer onto your washing machine – you’ll need special braces that are property installed on your wall to hold your appliances securely in place. 

6. Choose your sink wisely

Your laundry sink is a key part of the space and its aesthetic can determine whether or not your laundry design is attractive and/or functional. To be safe, go for a sink in a neutral tone from a quality supplier.

Match the size of your sink to the size of your space and its intended use. For example, if you plan on soaking large loads of soiled clothes and filling up mop buckets a bigger sink may be necessary.
